Thanks to grungy weather and a number of QOC regulars participating in the Billy Goat event in NY, the turnout for the Granite event was quite a bit lower than usual, with 78 starts and 110+ people out on the courses. While this was a chilly day for volunteering, it was great running weather, and by all accounts people enjoyed themselves in the varied Granite terrain.
An interesting anecdote from the courses was that a duck was nesting about two feet north of control 108 (brown, red and blue courses). Being a well camouflaged as well as an exceptionally quiet and cool-headed duck, she was unnoticed by most runners (and by the course setter when setting the control). The duck was still in place and maintaining her composure at the control pick-up; on behalf of QOC, we would like to thank her for her patience.
A BIG thanks go out to the many volunteers who helped with running and helping with the event:
Esben Jepsen helped setting the remaining controls and water on the day of the event, while Rikke Jepsen and Russell Kenny helped setting up the registration area; Don Fish, Michelle Fish, Heidi Onkst, David Levine and Mike Stasiowski ran the registration desk; Christiana Logansmith and Greg Lennon provided Beginner’s Instruction to a large and a smaller group of interested newcomers; Amy Louden efficiently set up and ran the e-punch desk. She was aided for various functions by Allison Brown, Michael Wood and Jan Merka and Gogi Kalka. The control pickup was accomplished by Ben Roberts, Charles Carrick, Craig Shelden, Kim Jepsen, Michael Wood, Sam Listwak, and Tom Smerling; Craig and Michael offered to help with the pick-up when they were otherwise ready to head home – stepping in relieved the load on the other members of the pick-up crew which was much appreciated. Thanks go to Valerie Meyer for printing out the maps and driving them all the way to Granite.
Finally, we had many volunteers, including some non-members, go an extra mile to pick up trash in the woods, thus ‘giving back’ to the park system for all the pleasures we drive from using the parks. Thanks to Jody Landers for orchestrating this and for bringing trash bags and gloves.
