Course NotesClassic

Welcome to the Prescott Road parking area of Little Bennett Park! This park has sections of woods with rather unpleasant vegetation, and all courses have been designed in such a way as to minimize the encounters with this vegetation. Definitely stay away from areas shown with the darker shades of green, as well as rough open areas with green slash.

There are two start locations: Start 1(White, Yellow, and Orange courses) is less than 100m from the parking area. Start 2 (Brown, Green, Red, and Blue) is about 350m away from parking along a trail. In order to get runners past some of the unpleasant terrain in the beginning of the courses, all advanced courses have a trail leg from start to 1. We recommend sticking to the trail on this leg, but if you want to chance a shortcut, good luck!

The map shows several bridge crossings of Little Bennett creek using the purple overprint bridge symbol. These are not mandatory crossings: you can cross wherever you want, but use the bridges if you want to stay dry. The road in the southeast part of the map for the advanced courses and the campground are out of bounds and are marked on the map with purple X’s (road) purple out-of-bounds lines (campground).

Rootstocks shown on the map are somewhat outdated. No controls are placed on rootstocks, and individual rootstocks should not be used for precise navigation. However, clumps of rootstocks shown on the map are very visible in terrain and can be used for rough navigation.

Natural rock features, such as rocks and cliffs, are generally very small (often less than 50cm in height.) However, they tend to be quite distinct in the otherwise rockless terrain. Man-made rock features, such as cairns and stone walls, are generally distinct if shown on the map, though may be in various states of disrepair and overgrowth.

We hope that you enjoy the courses that were designed to bring competitors into the nicest bits of terrain whenever possible. And remember – avoid dark green and use appropriate leg cover to protect yourself from various briars and thorns.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
