The rain did not dampen the energy at Sunday’s QOC Classic event at the Historic Gunston Hall. QOC returned to Gunston Hall for the fifth year visiting George Mason’s home beautifully situated overlooking the Potomac River. Sid Sachs designed a combined White and Yellow course as well as a full set of traditional Orange, Brown, Green, Red and Blue courses enjoyed by 117 runners. Not only did runners have a chance to run around George Mason’s home many took advantage of the opportunity and learned about one of our founding fathers by touring the visitors center. It was surprising the number of first timers who braved the driving rain to tryout orienteering. KPMG had ten, Boy Scout Troop 996 brought out 16 in addition to pairs of folks who just wanted to see what was going on, and 6 people from Bob Turbyfill's Zero to Orange course. Universally they all enjoyed the event and plan to return to a future QOC meet. The Club extends a thank you to Nicole and Anna from Gunston Hall, who worked through the myriad of details to ensure this event could happen. This QOC quality event was made possible by the hard work of 14 volunteers, first time volunteer Reiko Rager and Jody Landers ensured we parked in the correct area. Daniel Heimgarter and Laura Linville led the registration shifts ably assisted by Bill Vienna and Jana Seidlova. Cecilia Landers monitored the map preparation area and ensure everyone had sufficient substance, Jeff Haske and Bill Wright expertly taught some first timers through beginner instruction – Mark Hicks jumped in when we had a surge. The epunch wizards Valerie and Amy delivered spectacular support to the meet in trying conditions. I would like to thank Charles Carrick, Rob Field, John Organek, and especially Kim Field for helping with Control Pick Up.
