On Saturday, 16 July 2011, a Bike-O was held at Pocahontas State Park, South of Richmond, Virginia. The weather cooled to the mid 80s under clear skies. 21 people showed up to go out in 13 groups.
All were given a 3 hour time limit. The May family was camping in the park w/o bikes, so they went out with 2 other groups on the Beginner course (9 controls). They placed 1st, even though they were on foot! The 3k short course for Beginners was a good challenge for the May kids, who knew how to use both the compass and pace. The BIG course included that for a total of 33 controls.
Thanks goes to Kara Chaconas and Ruth McDorman, who took a time penalty to visit all 33 controls beforehand to report any course problems. Thanks to Kara and Ruth, 3 corrections were made prior to the regular start. Thanks also to Ellen Stefaniak for advertising and showing up early to set up maps and help with registration and starts, and for also closing the course at 6pm. Finally thanks goes to Kristi Orcutt for getting the Permit, making, punch cards, scheduling the event, setting up maps, and most importantly, getting all the controls back out of the woods. THANKS Ladies! We could not have run a quality event with out you!
