Hello All,

Thanks to a grant QOC recently received from USOF, QOC juniors ages 13 to 20 have the unique opportunity to join a junior membership training program and take advantage of some very fun and advanced technology that will help them improve their orienteering, as well as meet and work together with other club juniors. Club member David Onkst began coaching the QOC junior member program. Those interesting in participating should e-mail David at qoccoach@verizon.net and let him know you want to be plan of this program. Juniors should come prepared to discuss their individual orienteering goals and experiences and what they would like to get out of the program.

Some of the planned highlights of the program include, but are not limited to:

  • The opportunity to use Garmin Forerunners to record an exact route from an orienteering course and then overlay that route onto the course map.
  • The opportunity to participate in a variety of individual and group training exercises to improve orienteering skills.
  • The opportunity to receive individual coaching based on analysis gleaned from e-punch and winsplit results.
  • The opportunity to create, develop, manage, and moderate a website devoted to the program and its goals.
  • The opportunity to participate in a local summer weekend training orienteering camp.

The idea for the formation of a QOC Junior Orienteering Program stemmed from the desire to use a grant that the club received from USOF—thanks to the efforts of Club Presidents Greg and Kathleen Lennon—to support the development of junior orienteering at the club level. The creation of a QOC Junior Orienteering Program in intended to help foster a sense of community among the club’s juniors and help them kindle a desire to improve their orienteering skills for use in a wide range of activities, whether they want to use them to simply participate in occasional club level local meets, or compete in A-Meets at the regional, national or international level. QOC club members who range from the ages of 13 to 20 (as defined by USOF--via a calendar year), and who are club members in good standing, may join the QOC Junior Orienteering Program by signing a liability waiver (or if they are under 18, by having their parents or legal guardian sign) and placing it on file with the program’s coach.
